Eight Candles of Light: A survey of our year on Kibbutz Nahal Oz

Eight Candles of Light:

A survey of our year on Kibbutz Nahal Oz

1. New Members

This year as well we accepted and absorbed new families with the purpose of enlarging and enriching the population of Nahal Oz. 26 new members were accepted between the ages of 27 and 59 together with 34 children. We continue in our endevour to bring new families and we're delighted to find that children who  were born on the kibbutz are showing interest in raising their own families here with us. All these new candidates represent the "New Zionism" who fit into our world of values. We are in constant contact with various authorities to help us find solutions to the question of housing for these potential members.

2. Education

The interaction of the new comers with the local younger generation has led to a gradual establishment of new families and fulfills our dreams of a growing population. In the field of education, 3 houses for pre-school children function throughout the year and they interact with all the communal activities. There is a direct link to the social and education of our children from the ages of Grade 1 through to the 12th Grade. They are cared for and guided by a professional team of workers who deal with their needs on a personal and communal basis. Our educational system has been enriched by 7 youngsters "Hamkubetset" in the 11th Grade from all parts of the Israel who study with our children at the Regional High School Sha'ar Hanegev, and have become an integral part of our youth group.

3. The petting zoo

The petting zoo on the kibbutz has returned to its activity and includes rabbits, donkeys, sheep's, guinea pigs etc. The children are fully involved in the nurturing and developing of the site and the animals and they are guided by professional people which make it a meeting place for all age groups in the society.

4. Pre Military Study Program

Directly after "protective edge" military operation, we worked diligently with the Pre Military Study Program at "Meitarim Lachish" to establish a branch of that program here on Nahal Oz. Now the third cycle is in its half way phase. Time has taught all of us how to include these exceptional young people into our lives and become an integral part of our community. Their educational program is fascinating and many members of the kibbutz take part in their activities. They are adopted by our families and feel they have a home away from home.

5. Youth Program

An addition to our Youth Program: In the current academic year, after expending a great amount of energy we opened a project for students studying at the Sapir College and living and doing voluntary work on Kibbutz Nahal Oz. For this purpose we amassed stipends for such students who are active in voluntary social services. Our aim is to enlarge the number of students in this program who will be in the forefront of young leaders in the South. The size of this program depends on the housing accommodation we can provide both in the short term and long term.

6. The Cultural Center

The local Cultural Center was established after "protective edge" military operation and act as a focal meeting point. This fulfills the ideal of mingling and interacting and strengthens the community. Today there are about 8 monthly functions for different tastes and age groups and of course activities which encompass all the generations. Most of the activities are organized using local talent and include the use of the member club house, pub and swimming pool.

7. Peimot

The Family Center "Peimot" (beats) was established to give answers to young parents and children in the field of child development, activities for young children and youth, activities for adults dealing with family development. The attractive center is open to the community of Nahal Oz and the surrounding settlements and offers a variety of programs.

8. Agricultural Cultural Center

From its foundation Nahal Oz has been an example for embracing agriculture together with settling the region. We are in the process of establishing the "Agricultural Cultural Center". This center will tell the story of the development of Nahal Oz and settling the Negev. The original dining room of Nahal Oz has been renovated and we are in the process of funding and planning the interior of this venture.

We take the light, together with all those who help us, into the coming year – a year that will be full of activities and great beginnings for Nahal Oz and all her friends here and abroad.
